In my latest conversation on The Marcel Podcast, I sat down with author, keynote speaker, and executive coach Bruce Mayhew to explore what it really means to become an inspired leader. Bruce’s own journey—from a quiet, introverted kid who often felt unnoticed to a trusted leadership advisor—shaped much of our conversation. We explored some very practical leadership questions:

    • How do you balance care and accountability?
    • What does it take to build trust and transparency on a team?
    • How can leaders create a strong microculture, even when the larger organizational culture isn’t ideal?
    • How can leaders better understand the goals and aspirations of the people they lead?

One message stood out: Leaders don’t have to wait for the organization to create a great culture. They can begin creating one within their own team.

    Quotes:

    • “Accountability can’t only be a stick; it has to be a carrot.”
    • “We all have something remarkable to offer. It doesn’t mean that we have to shoot for the moon, but be really authentic. Know what you want.”
    • “Be really clear on the house that you want to build, the team that you want to build, and then let the people who live in that house decide how to paint some of the rooms.”

    Takeaways:

    1. Inspired leadership = clarity + humanity: Know where the team is going and who you are as a leader, then lead with authenticity, transparency, and support.
    2. Human skills drive performance: Empathy, communication, curiosity, and emotional intelligence are not “soft”; they’re essential to advancement and results.
    3. Microculture is your real culture: The daily behaviors, expectations, and relationships inside your team matter more than the corporate mission statement on the wall.

    Conclusion:

Inspired leadership isn’t about titles or charisma; it’s about clarity, curiosity, and the daily human choices leaders make. Bruce Mayhew’s journey from quiet introvert to trusted corporate trainer and executive coach shows how empathy, emotional intelligence, and honest accountability can transform not just teams, but entire microcultures inside organizations. When leaders know the “house” they want to build, invite their people to help decorate the rooms, and stay relentlessly curious about each person’s story and goals, they create workplaces where trust grows, performance rises, and people genuinely flourish.
